Femicide is the most extreme form of gender-based violence and is defined as "the killing of women because they are women". In other words, it is a hate crime against women, based only on their gender. It is a model that includes the murder of women as a result of violence, which is committed by men against women, while women become victims because they do not fulfill socially imposed gender roles. Men's violence escalates and leads to the murder of women, which makes femicide a social and public problem that requires multiple social reactions in order to successfully suppress it. In the criminal legislation, in most countries, femicide is not classified as a special crime, but is classified as a special form of murder. Only a few Latin American countries legally recognize femicide as a crime. Basic conclusions were presented about the frequent increase in violence against women as well as more serious forms. Various authors emphasize that it is necessary to take preventive measures and raise the awareness of society in order to solve violence against women and thus the fatal outcomes of women. The purpose of this paper is to determine the prevalence of femicide and to describe in more detail its characteristics, causes, and prevalence in today's society, and to determine how its presence affects society, politics, dominant social values, and how the motives of femicide are identified.
