Abstract (english) | Objective: The objective of the paper is to examine which of the twelve offered obstacles volunteer firefighters in the Republic of Croatia consider to be the most serious.
Methods: This survey was conducted among 379 respondents out of a total population of 32,544, the respondents were volunteer firefighters from urban, rural and semi-rural areas of the Republic of Croatia. The online questionnaire or survey that was conducted in this research consisted of six parts: demographic characteristics of respondents, obstacles to volunteering, attitudes and satisfaction, conflict between private life and voluntary work, behavior and intentions related to absence and intention to leave the service. The introductory part referred to the respondents' demographics with six questions, in the section on obstacles to volunteering, twelve obstacles were offered, in the section on satisfaction with volunteering, the respondents were offered six answers related to their attitudes and satisfaction with voluntary work, the section related to conflict offered seven possibilities of private conflict life with voluntary work, in the part that refers to absence from training and exercises, two answers were offered, and in the last part, five options for leaving the fire service were offered.
Results: Regarding personal life conflicts, volunteer firefighters mostly disagree that firefighting activities separate them from their private activities and that they have to miss family activities or spending time with friends due to obligations in the fire department. They also generally disagree that firefighting activities physically or emotionally prevent them from family obligations or duties. They do not feel that there is any stress caused by firefighting activities that would prevent them from doing the things they enjoy. They generally do not agree that they often miss training and exercises, and they do not agree at all that they often think about missing training and exercises. They very rarely consider giving up their volunteer fire service and show no interest in leaving the service. 80.74% of respondents rated the obstacle of work/school conflict as the most significant obstacle. The conducted ANOVA test comparing the obstacles evaluated by women and men revealed a value of P˂0.001, which indicates that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean values of the groups, here it was also determined that all womwn respondents evaluated financial reasons, conflict with management, lack of interesting activities and difficulties with transportation as the most serious obstacle, while men rated the work/school conflict as the most serious obstacle. By comparing the obstacles determined on volunteer firefighters from the Republic of Croatia and Finnish firefighters according to the ANOVA test, a P value of 0.006 was determined, which indicates that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean values of the groups 33 of firefighters from the Republic of Croatia and Finland (Malinen et al, 2018). The most serious obstacle identified in these two studies also differed, so the volunteer firefighters from the Republic of Croatia rated the conflict between work and school as the most serious obstacle, while lack of time was rated as the most serious obstacle among volunteer firefighters in Finland (Malinen et al, 2018).
Conclusions: The research showed that the most serious obstacles for volunteering firefighters in the Republic of Croatia is the work/school conflict, which did not confirm the hypothesis that the most significant obstacle is other work-related difficulties. The second and third identified obstacles are lack of time and other difficulties related to work, which did not confirm the hypothesis that one of the three most serious obstacles is a lack of financial resources. This hypothesis was confirmed only in the part of the sample where the respondents were women. The survey confirmed that volunteer firefighters in the Republic of Croatia do not show interest in leaving the fire service. The research showed that there is a significant difference in the perception of obstacles by volunteer firefighters in the Republic of Croatia compared to the obstacles faced by volunteer firefighters in Finland (Malinen et al, 2018). |
